What is the Business Register?

Like the German Handelsregister or Companies House in England the Business Register is a public register of the Republic of Austria. All registered businesses are registered there. A Business Register excerpt contains the most important information on businesses that are subject to Austrian business law, such as the name, address, legal form, share capital, persons authorised to represent the company (managing directors, authorised officers), owners and much more.

The following legal entities are registered in the Business Register:

  • sole proprietors/traders
  • general partnerships
  • limited partnerships
  • stock corporations
  • limited liability companies
  • co-operative societies
  • mutual insurance societies
  • savings banks
  • private foundations
  • European economic interest groupings
  • Societas Europaea (SE)
  • Societas Cooperativa Europaea (SCE)
  • other legal entities registration of which is required by law

Every legal entity is allocated a Business Register number, which consists of numerals plus a check letter.

For more information on the Business Register visit the website of the Federal Ministry of Justice.
